The Python, sometimes given the name of Monty the Python by skippers is an animal from the Jungle Cruise.
Description
The python is a giant rock-python. Despite being indigenous to Asia and Western Africa, this animal inhabited the Amazon rainforest.
History
Biography
"Monty" the python was a rock python in the 1930s. Through unknown means, the snake came to live in the Amazon rainforest as opposed to its native homes in Asia or Africa. Skippers of the Jungle Navigation Company would give the animal the nickname of, "Monty" when encountering it on their tours. At some point, Monty was photographed moments before scaring archaeologist Indiana Jones who had a phobia of snakes.
Development history
In Disneyland, the python originally appeared outside of the shrine but was later moved to the Amazon. In the Magic Kingdom, the snake appeared in the Congo Basin, outside of the pygmy camp where it was implied to have scared off the local tribe. In 2021, this scene was changed to represent the Amazon rainforest.

In this version of the ride, the python appears after passing by Boats & Baits in the Amazon. In the Amazon River Base is a skipper menu saying that on Fridays they eat the fillet of Rock python. Albert Awol also has the dialogue, "Recent reports of giant pythons have been greatly exaggerated. These reptiles cannot digest children weighing over sixty pounds in a single bite. The largest child they can consume at any one time would have to weigh less than forty-five pounds". A mural in the river base advertising the Jungle Navigation Company shows the python.
Skipper Canteen
There is an illustration of the python in the menus.[1] The python makes an additional appearance in a portrait of Dr. Albert Falls discovering the Cambodian Shrine along the Mekong river. The python appears suspended from a branch, watching Doctor Falls as he strikes a pose for the painter.
Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar
In Trader Sam's bar is a photo of the python lurking behind the back of Indiana Jones (represented by a skipper) with a note from Sam saying it occurred after Jones left Sam's bar, triggering his ophidiophobia and presumably resulting in him returning to the bar for more drinks to soothe said fear.
Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room
Claude tells guests about how he and Clyde encountered the python, triggering a screaming response from Clyde due to his fear of the snake.
Film
Jungle Cruise
The boa constructor imitates the pose of the python in this film. In this film, snakes are used as spies for Lope de Aguirre.

Trivia
- The skipper appointed nickname of, "Monty" is an allusion to the 1960s English comedy-group Monty Python.
- The python's patterns resemble those of Kaa from the Jungle Book.
- Possible explanations for Monty being out of their native habitat could be that it travelled along the supernatural Rivers of Adventure or that it was one of many animals shipped to the Amazon by the Jungle Navigation Company, like to their Amazon River Base.
- The python's design on the map of the Skipper Society has a Hidden Mickey on it.
